German Army Orders IdZ-ES Soldier Systems from Rheinmetall in Billion-Euro Contract

Rheinmetall has received a significant new order from the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) for its IdZ-ES ('Infantry Soldier of the Future – Enhanced System') soldier systems. The contract, valued at around €1.04 billion gross, covers the modernization of existing systems and the procurement of additional ones.

The order was placed by the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw). It includes the delivery of 237 new platoon systems, equipping an additional 8,600 soldiers. Deliveries are scheduled to take place between November 2027 and December 2029. This call-off is part of a larger framework agreement signed in February 2025, with a maximum value of €3.1 billion, running until the end of 2030.

A platoon system typically comprises individual equipment for 35 soldiers, along with peripheral components such as advanced IT, optics, and protective gear. Rheinmetall acts as the general contractor, coordinating the work of over 30 subcontractors.

Prior to this latest order, the February 2025 framework agreement already included a firm order for the modernization of 68 existing systems and the acquisition of 24 new ones, worth approximately €417 million. This framework agreement represents the largest of its kind to date for both Rheinmetall and the BAAINBw.

The modernized systems will address obsolescence and enable communication and data exchange with vehicle platforms, integrating into the D-LBO ('Digitisation of Land-based Operations') network. This upgrade enhances digital battlefield capabilities and data transmission efficiency.
