German-Czech initiative addresses food waste through cross-border collaboration

The cross-border initiative, carried out by Tafel-Akademie and the Czech organization Zachraň jídlo, aimed to curb the disposal of edible food products. By targeting consumers aged 13 to 35 via social media campaigns and digital content, the project sought to shift consumption habits and improve awareness regarding food waste reduction at the household level.

Beyond education, the project facilitated 74 gleaning events where 250 volunteers recovered approximately 39 metric tons of produce. These fruits and vegetables, often rejected by standard commercial retailers due to aesthetic imperfections, were instead donated to charitable institutions. The project also served to inform farmers about the potential for surplus recovery.

Research conducted in the Czech Republic examined the influence of date labeling on consumer disposal habits. The findings prompted roundtable discussions between policymakers and industry stakeholders, underscoring the need for clearer labeling policies and better integration across the food supply chain.
