German education network reduces food waste across 44 centers

The Association of Rural Education Centers (VBLR) in Germany has completed a multi-year project aimed at curbing food waste within its 44 member facilities. Supported by the German Environmental Foundation (DBU), the initiative focused on systemic changes to internal catering processes as well as broader public education regarding food sustainability.

By implementing standardized protocols for tracking and evaluating waste, participating centers achieved significant reductions, with losses ranging between 4 and 14 percent of total stock. These figures represent a marked improvement compared to industry-wide benchmarks in commercial catering, which can reach up to 35 percent.

Beyond internal operations, the project featured 126 seminar days engaging over 1,800 participants, including consumers and agricultural producers. Post-seminar surveys indicated that over 80 percent of participants gained a deeper understanding of food waste issues. The findings and communication strategies developed during the project have been compiled into a publicly available guide to assist other institutions in reducing their environmental footprint.
