German Electricity Prices Set to Decline in 2026

The German government plans to significantly lower energy prices starting in 2026. The objective is to ease the financial burden on households and businesses.

14 October 2026

The German government is set to implement substantial measures to reduce energy prices from 2026. The aim is to alleviate the financial burden on households and businesses while simultaneously promoting the transition to climate-friendly energy sources.

These plans include the abolition of gas storage levies, billions in subsidies for electricity grid fees, and reductions in certain electricity taxes. Overall, consumers are expected to benefit from approximately 10 billion euros in annual relief. A notable decrease in electricity prices is anticipated as subsidies for grid fees directly reduce costs for consumers.

Estimates suggest that the reduction in grid fees could lead to an annual saving of around 100 euros for an average household consuming 3,500 kilowatt-hours per year, a reduction of about nine percent in electricity costs. However, the actual savings will vary regionally.

The changes will also impact industries, with industrial electricity costs projected to fall, enhancing business competitiveness and investment. Furthermore, new EU regulations for building energy performance certificates will take effect in May 2026, standardizing requirements across Europe.
