German environmental foundation reports record demand for green startup funding

Funding applications from environmentally focused startups to the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) have more than doubled since 2019. In 2025, the DBU processed 208 applications, according to a report published Wednesday. While the absolute number of green startups in Germany has grown to approximately 4,700, their share of total new business incorporations dropped to 13 percent last year from 20 percent in 2023.

Industry analysis from the Borderstep Institute’s Green Startup Report 2026 suggests that the decline in market share is due to the dominance of competing priorities, such as artificial intelligence and national security, coupled with a general cooling of investment readiness and regulatory uncertainty. Despite these hurdles, data indicates that green startups remain vital to decarbonization, with their technologies reducing greenhouse gas emissions by more than 70 percent on average compared to traditional market alternatives.

DBU Secretary General Alexander Bonde stated that the foundation remains committed to supporting these companies as traditional funding sources for sustainability fluctuate. The DBU currently provides up to 125,000 euros in non-repayable funding over two years, supplemented by technical mentorship. The foundation expects to onboard its 100th funded startup in the coming weeks.
