German firms develop new methods for glue-free paper packaging
Three German companies are developing new technologies to seal paper packaging without adhesives, aiming to meet stricter recycling targets.

German research and industrial firms Fraunhofer, Hermann Ultraschall, and Henkel are collaborating to develop glue-free methods for sealing paper packaging. The initiative aims to address Europe's tightening recycling regulations and reduce challenges within the recycling process.
Traditionally, adhesives, labels, and coatings used on paper packaging can hinder or prevent effective recycling. These substances, known as "stickies," can damage recycling machinery and degrade the quality of recycled paper, or even lead to batches being rejected. The European Union's new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), effective from August, mandates that all packaging must be at least 70% recyclable by 2030.
The PAPURE project, led by Fraunhofer, is developing a laser-based process to seal paper without any adhesive. The project, set to conclude in September, seeks an industry partner to bring the technology to market, with researchers hoping for a launch within two years.
Concurrently, engineering firm Hermann Ultraschall has acquired rights to an ultrasonic paper sealing technology, which it likens to welding paper. The company is reportedly in discussions with major market players to introduce the technology into mass production.
Significant challenges include adapting existing production lines and investing in new machinery, as the technologies are not universally applicable to all paper types. However, the companies believe these innovations will offer more sustainable solutions for the packaging industry.
