German Greens Focus on Heat Protection and Public Transport at State Convention

The German Green Party held its state convention in Bautzen, focusing on measures to address the impacts of climate change, such as heatwaves, and to enhance public transportation. The party aims to implement policies that resonate with citizens' daily worries and improve their quality of life.

A resolution, passed almost unanimously, emphasizes closer engagement with citizens. The proposal includes transport sector improvements, such as affordable regional public transport via a "Fair-Ticket" system and discounts on the Deutschlandticket for low-income individuals and families, intending to make public transit a more appealing option.

In preparation for increasingly hot summers, the Greens are demanding the installation of air conditioning in care facilities, hospitals, and kindergartens, as well as free drinking water in public buildings. The proposal also incorporates violence prevention measures, free menstrual products for women, and mobile meeting places for the elderly.

Party leaders, including Franziska Schubert, warned against societal polarization and economic pressures. Schubert also criticized the rise of right-wing populist parties and the actions of the state's interior minister, which she argued undermine civil rights.
