German Household Crisis Risks Pushing Economy Deeper into Recession
Germany's economy may face a deeper recession due to an ongoing domestic budget crisis and the resulting uncertainty. Investors and businesses await clarity on fiscal policy.

Germany's economy could be pushed deeper into recession by a prolonged domestic budget crisis and the associated uncertainty, according to an analysis by Hermann Bantleon GmbH.
Recent economic indicators, such as a rising ifo index and purchasing managers' index, had offered some hope for recovery in German industry, particularly in energy-intensive sectors. However, a recent court ruling has jeopardized the government's plans for financing, including energy price support.
The ongoing budget dispute in Berlin significantly complicates the government's ability to fund crucial programs for energy transition and investments in digitalization and semiconductors. An estimated budget gap of €40 billion to €50 billion requires either further borrowing or spending cuts, and the political process to resolve this could drag on for months.
Hartmann warns that prolonged uncertainty threatens investment, potentially causing many companies to put plans on hold or look for opportunities abroad. Additionally, an expected slowdown in the U.S. economy in 2024 could further exacerbate the situation. The lack of clarity in the political and economic landscape makes planning difficult for investors and businesses.
