German ID Card Becomes More Expensive, Easing Planned for Older Applicants
A new German identity card costs 46 euros from February. For those under 24, the price is 27.60 euros. People over 70 will receive application ease.
The cost of German identity cards has increased as of February 2026. A new identity card now costs 46 euros, up from the previous 37 euros. For individuals under 24 years old, the price has been reduced to 27.60 euros, though their cards are only valid for six years.
The reasons cited for the increase include rising production and personnel costs. The fees for temporary identity cards and passports remain unchanged.
Simultaneously, simplifications are planned, particularly for individuals aged 70 and above. They will no longer need to renew their identity cards once their current ten-year validity expires. This measure is part of a broader initiative to reduce bureaucracy.
Simplifications are also being considered for passports, such as no longer requiring updates for address changes in passport or ID card details. These reforms are expected to come into effect no earlier than the second half of the year.
Furthermore, the process for requesting a new PIN for the identity card online has been a point of contention. The federal government and the states have debated whether a PIN reset can be offered as a paid online service or if it must continue to require an in-person visit to an authority. The states have thus far insisted on in-person visits.
