Labor unrest in Germany’s automotive sector escalated this week as industrial action hit several major manufacturers, including Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and supplier Schaeffler. The strikes follow the expiration of a mandatory cooling-off period in late October, signaling a breakdown in current collective bargaining efforts.

The IG Metall union is demanding a 5% wage increase over 12 months alongside guarantees for job and site security. Employers have countered with a proposal for a one-time payment equivalent to 1% of annual gross wages in 2027, followed by a 1.3% wage hike starting in July 2028. Negotiations are scheduled to resume this Thursday.

The conflict occurs against a backdrop of financial stress within the German auto industry. Companies are managing sluggish demand in China and heightened regional competition, leading to widespread cost-cutting initiatives. Notably, Schaeffler recently announced plans to close five European facilities, impacting approximately 3,460 positions.

Management representatives have warned that further workforce reductions may be inevitable without significant reductions in hourly labor costs. At Audi, tensions remain high as workers demand long-term production guarantees, particularly following CEO Gernot Döllner's recent announcement regarding the company’s expansion plans in the United States.
