German Pain Society Warns of Care Risks from Cost-Saving Law

The German Pain Society (Deutsche Schmerzgesellschaft) has voiced serious concerns regarding the impact of Germany's healthcare cost-saving measures on patients with chronic pain. The organization stated that the new GKV-Beitragssatzstabilisierungsgesetz (BStabG), alongside ongoing hospital reforms, poses a significant threat to the treatment of millions of Germans.

According to the society, 22 percent of specialized pain treatment departments are currently facing existential threats. These departments are responsible for treating nearly half of all patients requiring interdisciplinary, multimodal pain therapy (IMST).

Professor Frank Petzke, President of the German Pain Society, described the situation as critical. He explained that capping hospital expenditures will force institutions to implement cost reductions, disproportionately affecting patient-oriented services like specialized pain care. "Cost pressure meets medical need," Petzke stated.

The society predicts that inadequate or delayed treatment will lead to higher long-term costs. Chronic pain left untreated can result in inability to work, depression, anxiety, and increased care needs, placing a greater burden on the healthcare and social systems. Early diagnosis and consistent management are emphasized as crucial to prevent pain from becoming chronic.
