German Pharmacies to Implement Telemedicine, Fee Increases, and Structural Changes
Effective July 1, 2026, German pharmacies will introduce assisted telemedicine services and see an increase in dispensing fees. Structural changes within the ABDA organization are also taking effect.
German pharmacies are set to undergo significant changes starting July 1, 2026, with the introduction of new services and adjustments to their operational framework.
A key development is the nationwide launch of assisted telemedicine (aTM). This service will enable pharmacies to support patients during video consultations or assess their suitability for such appointments, expanding their role in healthcare delivery.
The fixed fee for prescription medication dispensing will increase from 8.35 euros to 9.00 euros per pack. A further increase to 9.50 euros is scheduled for January 2027, aiming to support pharmacy operations.
Broader reforms within the pharmacy sector are also coming into effect. These reforms aim to grant pharmacies expanded competencies and introduce new tasks, including the administration of a wider range of vaccinations beyond those for influenza and COVID-19.
Technical updates include a mandate for pharmacies to replace certain identification cards, such as SMC-B cards and electronic health professional cards (HBA), by June 30, 2026, to ensure compatibility with the updated telematics infrastructure.
