German Pharmacists Association ABDA Highlights Need for Stable Pharmacies

The German Pharmacists Association (ABDA) has outlined significant challenges facing pharmacies in 2024, emphasizing the need for economic stability and robust patient care. In a video statement, ABDA President Gabriele Regina Overwiening announced plans for intensive discussions with members of the Bundestag to address proposed reforms by Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach. ABDA aims to transform these proposals into a reform that better serves patient needs and strengthens the pharmacy sector.

Overwiening specifically highlighted the lack of immediate adjustments to pharmacy remuneration as a critical issue. She also expressed strong opposition to proposals that could lead to patient care in environments without resident pharmacists, stating, "This we will not allow." The association is committed to ensuring local pharmacies can continue to supply high-priced medications.

While acknowledging some positive initial signals within the Ministry's draft, such as the potential for dynamic adjustments to fixed remuneration, ABDA stresses the urgency for these changes. The association has advocated for decades for a regular negotiation and adjustment mechanism for their fixed fees, similar to that for statutory health insurance physicians. ABDA insists that these regulations need legally defined frameworks and swift implementation, not delayed until 2027.

Beyond financial concerns, ABDA is pushing for increased decision-making autonomy for pharmacists, including greater flexibility in dispensing during supply shortages. The association also seeks effective measures to reduce administrative burdens. Furthermore, ABDA plans to launch a new campaign to attract young talent to the profession, identifying recruitment as a major challenge alongside financial viability. Overwiening urged collective action and perseverance to secure the future of pharmacies and ensure a secure drug supply for the public.
