German public broadcasting fee remains unchanged for now, increase postponed

The planned increase in Germany's public broadcasting fee (Rundfunkbeitrag), which was set to take effect on January 1, 2025, has been postponed for the time being. The reason is that the German federal states have not established the necessary legal basis for the fee adjustment.

According to the recommendation from the Commission for Determining the Financial Needs of Broadcasting Institutions (KEF), the fee was supposed to rise by 58 cents to 18.94 euros per month. However, as the federal states have not initiated the required steps to implement the KEF recommendation for the period 2025-2028, the fee cannot be adjusted within the deadline.

Consequently, public broadcasters ARD and ZDF filed a complaint with the Federal Constitutional Court in November 2024, arguing that their constitutionally protected right to adequate funding has been violated. Until the court reaches a final decision, the current regulations and the previous fee level will remain in effect.

For households and businesses, this means the current monthly fee of 18.36 euros will continue to apply for now. Any future adjustments and potential retroactive payments will be communicated separately. For those who pay via direct debit, the fee will be automatically adjusted once a new decision comes into effect.
