German Public Broadcasting Fee Service Urges Residents to Verify Account Ownership After Moves
Moving households can lead to unintended payment errors for German public broadcasting fees, as the registration number is tied to the individual rather than the property.
The ARD ZDF Deutschlandradio Beitragsservice has issued a reminder regarding the administrative complexities of the mandatory public broadcasting fee. In Germany, the fee is linked to a residential unit, but the registration number itself is tied to an individual. When a person moves, they take their registration number with them, which can lead to payment gaps or accidental payments for a former residence.
The organization highlighted cases where residents inadvertently continued paying fees for an ex-partner’s new residence after a split. Because the fee collector processes payments based on the registration number rather than the bank account holder’s name, the system does not flag if a third party is paying the fee for someone else’s account. This leads to legal payment obligations for the remaining resident, who may then face retroactive demands for their own residence.
To avoid such situations, the agency advises residents to ensure that the individual registered for the broadcasting fee at a specific address is also the one initiating the payment. When a co-resident moves out, those remaining should verify whether they are currently paying for the departing individual’s account and update their status accordingly.
Following a house move or separation, residents are required to register their own dwelling if they are not already the primary account holder. Failure to manage these records often leads to issues during the nationwide resident registration data reconciliation process, resulting in unexpected payment notices.
