German States Divided on AfD's Political Future and Committee Sizes
Following the AfD's electoral successes, German states are divided on how to proceed, with discussions focusing on the party's constitutional status and the size of parliamentary committees.
German states have expressed differing opinions on a proposal for a joint federal-state working group to examine the AfD party's constitutional standing after its recent electoral gains. The initiative, put forth by North Rhine-Westphalia's Minister President Hendrik Wüst, aims to explore the legal framework for dealing with the AfD.
Nine states have indicated their openness to participating in such an examination. However, four states, including Saxony and Hesse, have voiced opposition to any steps that might lead to a ban on the AfD. Three other states have not yet responded to the proposal. Wüst emphasized that gathering solid evidence is a prerequisite for any further action.
In parallel, parliamentary group leaders are reportedly in disagreement over the composition of standing committees. The AfD advocates for 12 members per committee, while other factions prefer 11. This difference stems from concerns that an even number of members could lead to voting ties, potentially stalling legislative processes.
Additionally, a regional center for political education has affirmed its commitment to continuing support for the "School Without Racism – School With Courage" network, despite potential political pressures. The network has received approximately €150,000 annually for its activities.
