German venture capital market records strong third quarter

The German venture capital market saw significant activity in the third quarter of 2026, with startups raising 4.5 billion euros. This figure marks the strongest quarterly performance since late 2021, pushing the total funding for the first nine months of the year to 9.5 billion euros, surpassing the annual totals for 2023, 2024, and 2025.

The surge in volume is primarily attributed to a small number of large funding rounds. Six mega-deals exceeding 100 million euros each accounted for approximately 3.5 billion euros of the total volume. Conversely, the number of transactions valued at one million euros or more declined to 89, reflecting a trend of capital concentration rather than broad-based investment.

Artificial intelligence remains the primary target for investors, accounting for 3.1 billion euros—or 69 percent—of the quarter's total investment. KfW Chief Economist Dr. Dirk Schumacher noted that while investor appetite for successful startups remains high, companies not positioned at the technological frontier continue to face significant challenges in securing financing.
