Germans' Fears in 2026: Economy and Living Costs Top Concerns

Germans are anticipating economic challenges in 2026, with a significant portion expressing concern over financial security and the cost of living, according to a new study released by R+V Versicherung AG.

The most prominent fear identified in the survey is the worry that personal finances will not be sufficient for long-term living, with 59 percent of respondents citing this as their primary concern. An equal percentage fears rising living expenses. Additionally, over half of the population is apprehensive about potential tax increases or reductions in public services.

Economic recession is a substantial worry, having seen a 10 percentage point increase in concern compared to the previous year, marking the most significant rise in any single fear surveyed. More than half of Germans now fear a worsening economic situation, up from 41 percent a year ago.

The affordability of housing is another significant concern, with half of respondents fearing that living costs will become prohibitively expensive. The study also noted that migration-related anxieties, such as the potential strain on state resources or societal tensions, remain among the top ten concerns, despite a decrease in migration levels.
