Germans Shifting to Digital Banking, Direct Banks Gain Prominence

Germans are increasingly conducting their banking entirely digitally, with direct banks solidifying their position as primary financial institutions. A representative survey by norisbank reveals that 55.6 percent of Germans now manage their finances digitally at their convenience.

Direct banks are no longer a niche option; nearly 30 percent of Germans use them as their main bank, including for their salary accounts. This represents the highest value in three years, showing a clear upward trend, particularly among younger demographics like the 30-39 age group.

The reasons for switching to direct banks are varied, but cost reduction, modern services, and flexibility are key drivers. Close to 40 percent cite reducing bank or credit costs as their primary motivation. The appeal of comprehensive digital packages and innovative features also plays a significant role.

The survey also highlights the importance of free account management for Germans, with over 64 percent deeming it essential. Despite the growing preference for digital banking, some individuals hesitate to switch due to perceived effort or lack of time.
