Germany Introduces Plastic Tax - EWKFondsG Act Effective 2024
Germany has enacted the Single-Use Plastic Fund Act (EWKFondsG), introducing a tax on single-use plastic products. The levy officially began in 2024, with the first payments due in 2025.

Germany has implemented a new levy on single-use plastic products with the passage of the Single-Use Plastic Fund Act (EWKFondsG) on May 11, 2023. This legislation, effective January 1, 2024, targets specific plastic items and aims to reduce environmental pollution and encourage circular economy principles.
While the first reporting period for the tax is 2024, with the initial payment expected in 2025, companies affected are advised to begin preparations now. This includes understanding and fulfilling reporting obligations to the Federal Environment Agency (UBA).
The EWKFondsG is part of Germany's commitment to broader EU environmental goals, including the "EU Green Deal." It implements EU Directive 2019/904, which aims to reduce the impact of certain single-use plastic products through Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). The scope includes plastic packaging for food, beverage containers, plastic carrier bags, and other specified disposable items.
The primary objective of the act is to prevent and minimize the environmental and health impacts of these products, while also promoting sustainable business models. Funds collected from the levy will be channeled into a dedicated fund to reimburse public waste management authorities for costs associated with the collection, cleaning, and disposal of relevant single-use plastic products.
