Germany opposes halting AI development, calls for international cooperation

Germany has announced its opposition to proposals for slowing down or halting the development of artificial intelligence (AI) within Europe. The country's digital ministry stated on Monday that stopping AI development is not a viable option for ensuring Europe's digital sovereignty.

The statement came in response to concerns and calls from leading AI developers for tighter safety measures. Major AI companies, such as Anthropic, have requested a slowdown in the pace of AI model development and stricter safety mechanisms. Germany's perspective is that continued research and innovation are crucial for maintaining Europe's competitiveness.

Germany is closely monitoring global AI developments and acknowledges the risk warnings issued by industry experts. However, the ministry noted that AI systems' ability to act autonomously and integrate with other systems without oversight could create new threats requiring new policy responses.

Furthermore, Germany has emphasized the importance of international cooperation in AI regulation. A ministry spokesperson stated that an effective regulatory framework necessitates the participation of both the United States and China. Germany is promoting discussions on this issue within the G7 framework.
