Germany Slashes Humanitarian Aid Funding Amid Budget Cuts

Berlin – Germany's parliament is set to approve budget cuts that will significantly reduce funding for humanitarian aid. The budget for the Foreign Office allocates approximately one billion euros for humanitarian assistance, a decrease of 53 percent compared to the previous year.

Maria Rüther, CEO of the German aid coalition Aktion Deutschland Hilft, expressed grave concern over the implications. "The consequences are dramatic for the people affected. The lives and health of millions of women, children, and men are at risk," Rüther stated. The reduced funding is expected to exacerbate hunger crises, increase displacement, and contribute to the spread of diseases.

Several of the coalition's more than 20 member organizations may have to scale back or cease aid projects and resort to staff layoffs. The situation is compounded by impacts on local partner organizations, which will also experience reduced international financial support.

Rüther emphasized that humanitarian aid is not a "nice-to-have" but a fundamental necessity for saving lives. "It is the bread, the drinking water, the shelter, the medical care," she described. The organization highlights that approximately 305 million people worldwide will require humanitarian assistance in 2025.

Aktion Deutschland Hilft has stated it will remain operational and adapt by increasing cooperation among its member organizations and enhancing planning efficiency. However, the group stresses that private donations are becoming increasingly critical as public funding shrinks.
