Germany Tightens EV Charging Infrastructure Rules for 2025
Germany is introducing new regulations for electric vehicle charging infrastructure starting in 2025. These changes primarily affect property owners and businesses.

As electric mobility gains momentum in Germany, new obligations for property owners and businesses regarding charging infrastructure will come into effect from the beginning of 2025. The new regulations aim to accelerate the expansion of charging points and facilitate the use of electric vehicles.
The Building Electrical Mobility and Charging Infrastructure Act (GEIG) introduces new requirements based on the updated EU Directive on Energy Performance of Buildings (EPBD). Effective from January 1, 2025, existing buildings with more than 20 parking spaces must provide at least one charging point for electric vehicles. Property owners are advised to begin planning these adaptations early and seek expert advice as needed.
The share of electric vehicles among new registrations in Europe stood at 14.8% by early 2024 and is expected to reach 25% by 2025. Germany's share has been somewhat lower due to the phasing out of purchase incentives but is also anticipated to grow. Furthermore, CO2 emissions pricing will increase from 2025, making electric vehicles a more compelling option, especially for companies facing stricter fleet emission targets.
