Germany Unveils National Pharmaceutical Strategy to Boost Competitiveness

Germany's federal government has approved a national pharmaceutical strategy intended to bolster the country's competitiveness in the pharmaceutical industry and ensure the reliability of drug supply chains. The strategy's release follows a long-anticipated summit in the Chancellor's office, where key industry stakeholders discussed the sector's future prerequisites within the European Union and specifically in Germany.

According to the government, Germany's attractiveness as a location for pharmaceutical research and development has diminished in recent years. The COVID-19 pandemic further exposed vulnerabilities in supply chains, particularly for essential medicines like antibiotics, highlighting the need for strategic changes.

The strategy outlines eight main points, focusing on areas such as accelerating clinical drug trials, streamlining regulatory processes, and promoting digitalization in healthcare. It also aims to reduce dependence on third countries, including China and India, for pharmaceutical manufacturing by diversifying supply chains and encouraging production within the EU.

The plan emphasizes the importance of intellectual property rights and fostering the financing of new innovation projects through tax incentives and other measures. The objective is to create predictable and stable frameworks that attract pharmaceutical companies to invest in Germany, while simultaneously safeguarding the financial stability of the statutory health insurance system.
