Giraffe Conservation Efforts Documented in "Catching Giants" PBS Premiere

The award-winning wildlife documentary "Catching Giants" will make its U.S. broadcast premiere on PBS stations and the PBS App in August 2026. The film offers an unprecedented look at one of the most ambitious giraffe conservation efforts ever captured on film.

Produced by Austin-based iniosante inc and Woodlenut Nonprofit, the documentary follows an international team of scientists and veterinarians as they undertake a high-stakes mission to capture, collar, and study wild giraffes in South Africa. This work is made urgent by a significant decline in giraffe populations, which conservationists have described as a "silent extinction."

The expedition, led by renowned giraffe researcher Dr. Francois Deacon from the University of the Free State, focuses on the Rooipoort Nature Reserve. The team aims to collar 20 wild giraffes, including adult males, a task not previously undertaken at this scale. A key scientific goal is collecting viable reproductive samples from free-ranging males, research critical to preserving the species' genetic diversity.
