Microsoft's GitHub Copilot has announced the integration of the Kimi K2.7 Code, an open source model developed by Chinese artificial intelligence company Moonshot AI. This integration represents a significant step, as it is the first instance of GitHub Copilot incorporating an external open source model into its service.

The Kimi K2.7 Code model is hosted on Microsoft Azure and operates on a pay-as-you-go pricing model. It is being progressively rolled out to Copilot Pro, Pro+, and Max subscription tiers. GitHub stated that the deployment will occur in phases, with ongoing monitoring of the model's quality and performance. Over the coming weeks, support is expected to expand to Copilot Business and Enterprise versions, as well as other application platforms.

Moonshot AI initially released and open-sourced the Kimi K2.7 Code model on June 12. According to the company, internal and external benchmark evaluations show that Kimi K2.7 Code significantly enhances instruction following for long context programming scenarios and improves performance in long-range coding tasks compared to its predecessor, the K2.6 model. The company also claims a substantial reduction in the tendency for overthinking in lengthy tasks, leading to an average token consumption decrease of 30%.

This move by GitHub Copilot signals an increased openness to leveraging diverse AI models within its platform. It may also indicate a broader trend in the developer tools market towards incorporating open source solutions alongside proprietary offerings.
