GitHub offers CD-ROM burning service for code repositories
Microsoft-owned code hosting platform GitHub has announced a new service that allows developers to burn their public code repositories onto physical CD-ROM discs.

GitHub, the code hosting platform owned by Microsoft, has introduced a new service enabling developers to archive their public repositories on physical CD-ROMs.
The company describes the offering as a way to preserve code in a tangible, lasting format, potentially for long-term archival or sharing across generations. GitHub humorously notes that the disc's longevity ultimately depends on the owner.
The service will be available in limited quantities, with pre-registration not guaranteeing a purchase. Users may experience delivery times of several weeks depending on their region.
This launch comes as the use of physical media continues to decline in favor of digital distribution. Sony, for example, recently announced that new PlayStation games will be digital-only from 2028, discontinuing physical releases.
