Global Green Economy Surpasses $5 Trillion Threshold

The global green economy has surpassed $5 trillion in market value, trailing only the technology sector in growth over the last decade, according to a report from Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and the World Economic Forum. Projections indicate this market could exceed $7 trillion by 2030 as companies increasingly integrate sustainability into their core value propositions.

Financial data indicates that green-focused companies are outperforming their peers. Since 2020, revenue from green operations has grown at twice the rate of conventional business lines. Furthermore, firms deriving at least 50% of their revenue from green activities typically command a valuation premium of 12% to 15% over competitors. This performance is supported by an increasing ability to attract lower-cost capital.

Technological advancement remains a primary catalyst for this shift. The costs of solar photovoltaics and lithium batteries have dropped by roughly 90% since 2010, allowing 55% of global emissions to be abated with currently cost-competitive solutions. China currently leads global deployment, having invested $659 billion in clean energy in 2024 alone, significantly outpacing other major economies in solar, wind, and battery manufacturing.

BCG Managing Director Patrick Herhold stated that the commercial opportunities now span across both geography and industry. The report advises executives to focus on three key accelerators to secure market share: achieving technological cost efficiency, engaging with regulatory frameworks, and securing diversified capital sources to scale operations effectively.
