GlobalFoundries expands Dresden factory, announces new AI chip platform
GlobalFoundries celebrated the topping-out of its Dresden expansion project and announced the FDX Fusion chip platform for physical AI. The expansion is set to significantly increase manufacturing capacity.

GlobalFoundries (GF) has marked a milestone with the topping-out ceremony for its SPRINT expansion project at its Dresden, Germany facility. The company also announced FDX Fusion, a next-generation chip platform designed for demanding Physical AI applications. These developments advance a major semiconductor expansion in Europe and underscore GF's commitment to locally developed and manufactured technologies.
The SPRINT project involves an investment of €1.1 billion to expand GF's Dresden manufacturing capacity. The expansion is projected to increase annual production to over one million 300mm wafers by the end of 2028, positioning Dresden as Europe's largest foundry site. This added capacity will support GF's specialized technologies for the automotive, aerospace, industrial IoT, and defense sectors, areas increasingly influenced by Physical AI.
The FDX Fusion platform aims to deliver highly integrated, energy-efficient chips within Europe. This technology is intended to meet the growing demand for Physical AI, which requires processing and real-time responses to data from the physical world. The company states this move enhances local capabilities in critical technological fields.
GlobalFoundries CEO Tim Breen emphasized that the expansion ensures the availability, trustworthiness, and local production of chips in Europe. Manfred Horstmann, GF's General Manager and Senior Vice President in Germany, added that the investment supports Germany's industrial future and the resilience of European supply chains. The expansion and new platform solidify GF's role as a key player in Europe's technology landscape.
