GLP-1 Medications Reshaping American Consumer Shopping Habits

GLP-1 medications, such as Ozempic and Wegovy, are influencing American consumer behavior beyond health benefits, significantly altering shopping habits, particularly in the apparel sector.

A survey of 500 U.S. adults who have taken GLP-1 medications within the past year, conducted by post-purchase services company ReturnPro, indicates a notable shift in how consumers purchase, size, and return clothing. The study specifically examined the impact of drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound on apparel spending and return behavior.

"GLP-1 drugs are reshaping body sizes for millions of shoppers faster than most retail systems were built to handle," stated Sender Shamiss, CEO of ReturnPro. He advises retailers to adapt their sizing and returns processes to remain competitive.

The research suggests that the medications' effects on mood and reward-seeking behavior may contribute to these changing shopping patterns. According to Eli Kraiem, a professor at Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology, GLP-1s affect not only the digestive system but also brain regions associated with motivation and self-regulation. As food becomes less of a central focus, individuals may redirect spending towards areas like fitness, clothing, and wellness, especially as they experience weight loss and renewed confidence.

This shift may represent a broader reconsideration of priorities for some users, leading them to update their wardrobes while anticipating their final weight loss outcomes.
