Gmail's Color Change for Stars and Important Flags Sparks User Complaints

Google has shifted the default color for starred and "important" flags in the web version of Gmail from yellow to blue. The company stated the change aligns with modern accessibility standards, aiming for a clearer and more user-friendly inbox for everyone.

However, since the update in mid-September, many users have voiced complaints. Gmail has long used yellow icons as a quick visual cue for email status. The new, highly saturated blue for both the star and the "important" flag has been criticized for diluting the visual hierarchy within the inbox.

Users report that the uniform blue color makes it harder to distinguish between different types of flagged emails. Some also find the new icons more prominent in the email list, contributing to a perceived sense of clutter.

Google has not provided an immediate option to revert to the classic yellow color. While users can manually select yellow stars through settings, this requires re-flagging previously marked emails. The "important" flag's arrow color cannot be changed independently but can be hidden entirely via inbox settings.
