GNC Shrinks U.S. Store Footprint, Closes Hundreds of Locations
Nutrition retailer GNC has significantly reduced its physical presence in the United States, closing hundreds of stores over the past three years. The company's store count dropped by 340 locations between 2023 and the end of 2025.

GNC, a prominent nutrition and wellness retailer, has continued to shrink its U.S. store network, closing a net total of 340 locations over the last three years. In 2025 alone, the company shut down 180 stores, following a closure of 165 stores in the prior year. The company ended 2023 with 1,960 stores, a decrease from the 2,300 locations it operated at the start of that year.
This contraction marks a substantial reduction from GNC's peak of approximately 5,200 U.S. stores when it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2020. The retailer's financial challenges, coupled with a shifting retail landscape that favors online sales and larger competitors, have driven these closures.
States experiencing the most significant net declines in GNC store counts between 2023 and 2025 include Florida with a loss of 42 stores, Texas with 40 fewer locations, and California with 20 closures. More than half of GNC's remaining stores are company-owned.
Acquired by China-based Harbin Pharmaceutical Group in late 2020 after emerging from bankruptcy, GNC has also been investing in its digital operations. The company has not announced plans to open new stores in 2025, indicating a continued focus on optimizing its existing footprint or a lack of expansion.
