GOG Offers Printable "Big Box" PC Game Packaging
PC gaming platform GOG has launched a new feature allowing users to download and print 3D models and high-resolution scans of classic PC game packaging. The initiative aims to evoke nostalgia for physical game collections.
GOG, a digital storefront for PC games, is reviving a piece of gaming history with its new "Printable Big Box" feature. This initiative allows users to download 3D models and printable templates of classic game packaging, enabling them to recreate the physical boxes that once lined collectors' shelves.
The initial collection features five titles: Armikrog, Descent, Hitman: Codename 47, Myst, and Star Trek: 25th Anniversary. Purchasers of these games on GOG can now access "3D Boxes" within the game's additional content. The downloads include an animated GLB file of the box art and a printable template in various formats like PDF and SVG.
GOG stated that the feature serves as a form of preservation. "Physical media doesn’t survive the way software can—boxes get lost, crushed, thrown out," the company explained. "Scanning them, and letting you print your own, is preservation in a different shape."
This move caters to a segment of gamers who hold nostalgic value for the tangible aspects of game ownership. It aligns with GOG's broader mission of making older PC titles accessible and playable on modern systems.
