Gojek Co-Founder Nadiem Makarim's Prison Sentence Reduced to Nine Years on Appeal
The Jakarta High Court has reduced the prison sentence for Gojek co-founder and former Indonesian Education Minister Nadiem Makarim to nine years. The revised sentence includes a fine and potential additional jail time.
The Jakarta High Court has reduced the prison sentence for Gojek co-founder and former Indonesian Education Minister Nadiem Makarim to nine years, along with a fine of 1 billion rupiah (approximately US$55,900). Makarim was previously sentenced to 10 years in prison.
In addition to the prison term, Makarim has been ordered to pay 548 billion rupiah (approximately US$30.6 million) in restitution to the state. Failure to pay the fine or restitution could lead to an extension of his prison sentence.
Makarim was charged in relation to the Ministry of Education's procurement of 1.2 million Chromebook laptops for schools between 2019 and 2022. He served as Indonesia's Education Minister from 2019 to 2024.
Prosecutors alleged that Makarim abused his ministerial authority to benefit Google, violating Indonesian anti-corruption laws. Authorities claim the procurement resulted in state losses totaling 1.5 trillion rupiah (approximately US$83.7 million).
Makarim has denied the allegations, stating there is no evidence of personal gain and refuting claims of state losses or benefiting specific companies.
