Goldman Sachs restricts employee access to advanced AI coding tools
Goldman Sachs has tightened access to AI-driven coding assistants, limiting use to specific engineering roles amid heightened focus on risk management.

Investment bank Goldman Sachs has restricted access to advanced AI coding tools, including Anthropic’s Claude Code and Microsoft’s GitHub assistants. Under guidance issued in October, the bank effectively curtailed the usage rights previously granted to broader business units, limiting the tools primarily to engineers and those working in quantitative research and trading.
Prior to this directive, personnel in various departments had been utilizing these platforms to model market trends and process client trading data. A spokesperson for the firm stated that the decision followed a review of productivity outcomes and institutional risk management protocols.
The move highlights broader caution within the financial industry regarding the integration of third-party AI software. Broker-dealers remain under strict regulatory requirements from bodies such as FINRA, which mandate rigorous oversight, cybersecurity, and data recordkeeping, driving major financial institutions to limit the use of public AI assistants in production environments.
