Gomi turns recycled Barbie dolls into new tech products

UK design studio Gomi has introduced a new collection of technology products crafted from recycled plastic toys, notably including Barbie dolls. The "Childhood Memories" collection, developed in partnership with Mattel, aims to repurpose discarded plastic dolls and other toys into functional electronic items.

The product range features speakers, power banks, and wireless chargers, each boasting a unique marbled aesthetic. This distinctive look is achieved by melting down old Barbie dolls and other recovered plastics, which are then reformed to create swirling patterns in vibrant colors like pink, purple, turquoise, and yellow. The batteries used in the speakers and power banks are also recycled, sourced from retired e-bike batteries.

Founded in 2017, Gomi's mission is to create sustainable technology, with a particular focus on recycling flexible plastic waste not commonly processed in the UK. The company's first product, a speaker, was released in 2023 and is made from the equivalent of approximately 44 plastic bags.

This initiative follows similar recycling programs launched by toy manufacturers like Hasbro and Lego, and Mattel's own PlayBack program. Gomi's approach transforms nostalgic childhood items into tangible, functional technology, demonstrating a commercial pathway for pre-loved plastic toys.
