Goods theft by "phantom freight forwarders" rising rapidly

The insurance company KRAVAG has observed a significant rise in goods theft where criminals pose as legitimate transport companies, referred to as "phantom freight forwarders." These fraudulent activities have escalated rapidly in recent years, often resulting in multi-million euro damages for transport firms and their clients.

According to KRAVAG's experts, criminals are increasingly exploiting digital platforms within the logistics industry. They apply for transport contracts, impersonating reputable companies. Once the goods are loaded, the perpetrators disappear with the cargo. While initially targeting metals, the scope of stolen goods has broadened to include electronics, clothing, and even coffee.

Traditionally, these scams involved manipulating email addresses of established freight forwarders. Criminals would subtly alter company email addresses to appear authentic. Forged documents, such as insurance certificates, were also commonly used. This method proved to be low-effort for the perpetrators.

More recently, criminals have advanced their tactics by hacking into the IT systems of transport companies. This allows them to control email communications and even alter information on freight exchange platforms. Consequently, identifying these sophisticated scams has become more difficult, leaving smaller transport companies without dedicated IT departments particularly vulnerable.

KRAVAG urges companies to enhance their cybersecurity measures, maintain up-to-date software systems, and train their staff to recognize suspicious communications. While transport liability insurance covers theft, fulfilling policy conditions, such as diligent document verification, remains crucial for claims.
