Google Adjusts Top AI Leadership, Hassabis Takes New Role
Google announced significant changes to its AI leadership structure on Wednesday. Demis Hassabis, who led Google DeepMind, will move into a new executive position.
Google is implementing key leadership changes within its artificial intelligence division, as announced by CEO Sundar Pichai on Wednesday. Demis Hassabis, formerly the head of Google DeepMind, will now serve as the chair of Google DeepMind and chief scientist at Alphabet.
Hassabis will also continue to lead Isomorphic Labs, Alphabet's drug discovery unit that utilizes AI. Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously DeepMind's CTO, is promoted to SVP of Google DeepMind, reporting directly to Pichai. Kavukcuoglu will retain his position as Google's chief AI architect.
The leadership shift occurs amidst heightened competition and rapid advancements in the AI field, with major tech companies like Microsoft and OpenAI making substantial investments in AI research and development.
These organizational adjustments aim to streamline AI efforts and accelerate innovation across Google's product lines and research initiatives.
