Google AI Completes Minecraft in 27 Hours Autonomously

Google researchers have achieved a notable milestone in artificial intelligence, with four Gemini 4 Argon AI agents successfully completing the video game Minecraft in just 27 hours. The AI agents achieved this feat entirely autonomously, including defeating the game's final boss, the Ender Dragon.
The four agents were placed in a procedurally generated Minecraft world and could communicate with each other via the in-game chat. Researchers provided no specific strategies, only the ultimate goal. All in-game actions and planning were performed by the agents themselves. The research team could monitor progress and issue commands to pause or terminate the test, but could not directly interfere with gameplay.
Upon starting the game, the agents quickly divided tasks, with some focusing on building structures, others on gathering resources and food, and some on exploration. They shared combat techniques and recovered lost equipment for teammates who died.
Over the course of the 27-hour playthrough, the four agents exchanged 229 messages and executed 2,783 programs, experiencing 605 deaths. Reaching the final dimension, The End, took 13.5 hours, with the remaining time dedicated to defeating the Ender Dragon. The process involved 1.35 billion input tokens, estimated to cost approximately $1,620 for a typical user.
According to the research team, this marks the first instance of AI agents completing Minecraft from start to finish entirely autonomously. The experiment utilized standard Mineflayer libraries without pre-determined maps or human assistance.
