Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge Require 20GB Disk Space for AI Models

Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge have both raised the minimum free disk space requirement for downloading local AI models to 20 gigabytes. The update, which was recently implemented, has sparked discussion among users regarding storage demands.

The AI models are intended to enable the execution of certain artificial intelligence functions directly on the local device, reducing the need to send data to servers. While the models themselves may not occupy the full 20GB, the browser requires this space to initiate the download process and manage any temporary files.

According to Google, Chrome now requires a minimum of 20GB of free disk space to download these AI models. Microsoft Edge follows a similar policy but adds a requirement of at least 5.5GB of graphics card memory (VRAM). Edge users must also ensure their system runs on Windows 10, Windows 11, or macOS 13.3 or later.

Users can opt to disable local AI functionalities within Chrome's settings if desired. Microsoft Edge, conversely, aims to manage storage automatically: if free disk space drops below 10GB, the browser will automatically delete local AI models to free up space for other operations.
