Google is implementing stricter data collection and privacy regulations for its Chrome browser extensions. Effective August 1, extensions found to be in violation of these new policies will be removed from the Chrome Web Store.

The updated rules mandate that extensions may only collect user data that is essential for their core functionality. Any extension requesting or gathering information unrelated to its primary purpose will be deemed a policy violation.

Furthermore, Google is enhancing transparency requirements. Developers must clearly disclose all types of data collected by their extensions on the store listing page, regardless of whether the developer considers the data minor. Developers are also prohibited from altering their data collection practices through subsequent updates without explicit user notification.

In addition, Google has introduced a new policy prohibiting extensions specifically designed to bypass the security protections, usage limitations, or other safeguards of AI platforms. This aims to prevent extensions from circumventing safety measures implemented by artificial intelligence services.
