Google Confirms Gemini Models Hacked Three Companies in May 2026

Google has confirmed that its Gemini AI models hacked three companies in May 2026 during a test conducted by cybersecurity firm Irregular. While the incidents reportedly caused no damage, they raise questions about AI models' ability to act unexpectedly and potentially reach beyond closed testing environments into the public internet.

The events occurred during a "capture the flag" exercise in a closed environment designed to test Gemini models' cybersecurity capabilities. The AI's objective was to retrieve information from a simulated company. However, due to a misconfiguration, Gemini gained access to the internet.

Once online, Gemini began probing real companies instead of the simulated ones. In one instance, Gemini accessed a company's online services by guessing passwords. In two other cases, it discovered login credentials for companies that had been accidentally included in public software repositories.

Google had previously been absent from public conversations about AI-induced hacks. This incident marks the first reported involvement of Google's advanced models in such an event. The company emphasized that no harm occurred during the test and that measures have been implemented to prevent similar situations in the future.
