Google DeepMind CEO Calls for AI Regulation

Demis Hassabis, co-founder and CEO of Google DeepMind, has publicly urged the U.S. government to implement regulations for artificial intelligence, specifically targeting "frontier-class" AI models.

In a recent essay, Hassabis proposed creating a new "Standards Body," modeled after FINRA, which oversees Wall Street brokers. This semi-independent organization, funded largely by the industry and staffed by technical experts, would be tasked with rigorously testing the most advanced AI systems for potential risks, including cybersecurity threats, biological dangers, and deceptive capabilities, before they are deployed.

Hassabis's call for regulation comes from a leading figure in AI development, highlighting growing concerns within the industry about the pace of advancement and the potential for misuse. The CEO stated that self-regulation within the AI sector is no longer sufficient to manage these risks.

This initiative aligns with broader discussions about AI governance. Over 200 AI experts have signed a public call for action, and legislative proposals, such as those aimed at regulating data center construction due to AI's environmental and safety impacts, are already emerging in the U.S. Congress.
