Google DeepMind Head Warns of AI-Related Risks

Google DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis has warned that a lack of AI safety measures could lead to severe incidents. He described recent AI-driven attacks as "early warning signs".

Demis Hassabis, co-founder and chairman of Google DeepMind, has issued a warning regarding the safety implications of artificial intelligence. Hassabis stated that recent cyberattacks orchestrated by AI agents should be considered "early warning signs" and that severe global cybersecurity incidents could occur soon if systems are not made more secure.

Hassabis, who also serves as Chief Scientist at Google's parent company Alphabet, indicated at an AI summit in Dublin that current systems are not yet robust enough to cause widespread destruction. However, he cautioned that within one to two years, the situation could escalate to catastrophic events if the industry, companies, and governments do not significantly increase their efforts to protect these systems.

The current wave of AI-driven attacks, though limited in damage, highlights a vulnerability that could lead to major global cybersecurity crises if not addressed proactively. This necessitates a concerted effort across sectors to enhance system security.

Microsoft President Brad Smith echoed these concerns, emphasizing the need for new AI safety laws and regulations to keep pace with innovation. Hassabis also stressed that any new international standards or oversight mechanisms must be agile and adaptable to avoid stifling technological progress.
