Google DeepMind Leadership Shifts: Hassabis to New Role, Kavukcuoglu to Lead AI

Google announced significant leadership changes on Wednesday. Demis Hassabis, the former CEO of Google DeepMind, will transition to a newly created role as chair of Google DeepMind and chief scientist at Alphabet. He will also continue to lead Alphabet's drug discovery unit, Isomorphic Labs.

Hassabis stated his new position will allow him to "focus on the big picture and help influence what is to come," referring to the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI). He has previously predicted AGI could be achieved by 2030. Google CEO Sundar Pichai described the role as vital to Alphabet and humanity.

Taking over leadership of Google DeepMind is Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously the unit's chief technology officer. Kavukcuoglu will also retain his role as Google's chief AI architect. In a separate move, Jeff Dean, an early Google employee and co-founder of Google Brain, is leaving to co-found Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation focused on automating machine learning and science. Google announced it will be a founding investor in Dean's new venture.

The executive shifts occur amid increased competition in the AI sector, with rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic having recently recruited key AI talent from Google. The delay in the launch of Google's Gemini model has also raised investor concerns about the company's competitive standing.
