Google Expands File Transfer Support to Older Pixel Phones

Google is broadening the availability of its cross-platform file transfer feature, which mirrors Apple's AirDrop functionality, to older Pixel smartphone models. Recent reports indicate that users of the Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 series are beginning to receive notifications about the feature's rollout.

This expansion follows Google's earlier integration efforts between its Quick Share service and AirDrop compatibility. The company first introduced AirDrop compatibility for Pixel phones with the Pixel 10 series last fall, later extending support to the Pixel 8a models. Recently, Pixel Tablet users also reported gaining this capability, and now the Pixel 7 and 8 series are reportedly being included.

However, the practical implementation of the feature appears to be ongoing. Some users have indicated that while they received notifications, the file transfer functionality itself is not consistently working. This suggests that the feature may still be unstable on older hardware, or that Google is pushing notifications separately from the full feature deployment.

By extending this AirDrop-like functionality, Google aims to improve file sharing across different operating systems, addressing a long-standing user request. The company is expected to continue refining the feature and improving its stability in subsequent software updates.
