Google Flights: Optimal booking windows for 2026 holiday travel identified

Analysis from Google Flights shows that airfare for the 2026 Thanksgiving and Christmas periods is subject to specific timing patterns. For Thanksgiving travel, the lowest fares are generally found between 21 and 57 days before departure, with the statistically cheapest point occurring 34 days prior to the flight date.

For Christmas travel, the booking window shifts earlier. Google reports that optimal pricing is typically found 33 to 67 days before departure, with the lowest prices often hitting 56 days before the travel date. With demand rising, prices are expected to increase as these periods conclude.

Google Flights also clarified that common travel "hacks" often touted online yield little to no benefit. James Byers, a group product manager at Google, stated that clearing cookies or using Incognito mode does not influence prices. Similarly, VPN usage to mask location is ineffective, as airlines require a billing address that reconciles with the user's actual location.

While conventional wisdom suggests booking on specific days like Tuesday, the impact is minimal. Google data shows that prices on a Tuesday are, on average, only 1.3% lower than on the most expensive days of the week. Travelers are advised to prioritize booking within the suggested time windows rather than relying on unverified tactics.
