Starting October 9, 2026, Google's Gemini application will restrict free users to the Flash-Lite model. This change aims to streamline resource allocation for its AI services.
Google is modifying the model availability within its Gemini AI application for personal user accounts, effective October 9, 2026. The company stated the changes are intended to clarify and manage the usage of its artificial intelligence service resources.
Beginning on the specified date, users accessing Gemini via its web or app interfaces without a subscription will no longer have access to the full Gemini Flash or Pro models. Instead, these users will be transitioned to utilize the more compact and lightweight Gemini Flash-Lite model.
Subscribers to the AI Plus plan will also experience changes, with notification emails to be sent out detailing when these modifications will take effect for their accounts. The announcement suggests that Pro model access will be removed from the AI Plus offering.
Google categorizes its AI offerings into tiers, including AI Plus, AI Pro, and AI Ultra, alongside the free tier. The upcoming adjustments specifically target the free user base and may impact certain subscription tiers by altering the accessible AI models.
