Google introduces new school controls for AI tools while keeping Search integrated

Google has announced new administrative controls allowing K-12 schools to disable Gemini and related AI tools for student accounts. Under the new policy, these services will be switched off by default until administrators explicitly enable them, addressing concerns over AI access in educational settings.

However, Google maintains a strict policy regarding its search engine: schools wishing to provide students with Google Search must accept the inclusion of AI Overviews and AI Mode. The company has clarified that it does not offer a non-AI version of its search product for schools. If an institution chooses not to enable the AI features, they must forgo access to Google Search entirely.

The update follows pressure from US lawmakers and organizations such as Common Sense Media, which previously flagged AI search features as posing potential risks in schools. Google states that the AI integration in Search is designed to provide guided, step-by-step assistance rather than direct answers, serving as a pedagogical tool.

The controls are expected to be fully implemented by early 2027. While some features like Guided Learning are being deployed globally, the company has yet to clarify how these controls will interface with local data privacy regulations in international markets.
