Google invests millions in virtual cell initiative

Google DeepMind, Meta, and AI drug discovery startup Isomorphic Labs are jointly investing $300 million in an initiative to create a "virtual cell" for researchers to combat disease. The project is led by Biohub, a nonprofit biomedical research organization founded by Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan.
This investment is part of a larger $1.8 billion "Virtual Biology" initiative aimed at building AI datasets. These datasets are intended to allow researchers to digitally ask, predict, and answer biological questions.
Biohub, established in 2016, aims to prevent and cure diseases by developing a "high-accuracy predictive model" at the cellular level. The goal is to accelerate the development of new therapies through advanced computation and artificial intelligence.
The funding is expected to significantly advance the understanding of biological data and unlock new avenues for medical research. The virtual cell approach could enable the simulation of complex biological processes and virtual testing of potential drugs before human trials.
